Trade lanes. Military patrols. Mining convoys. Everything moved with the predictable rhythm of a civilized system\u2014until the anomaly tore through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRun it again,\u201d Rourke said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lieutenant Maris didn\u2019t look up. \u201cI\u2019ve run it twelve times, sir. It\u2019s not a glitch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The projection shifted. A massive shape\u2014irregular, tumbling\u2014cut across the outer shipping lanes. It wasn\u2019t accelerating. It wasn\u2019t maneuvering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was just\u2026 drifting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But its trajectory intersected three major colonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke frowned. \u201cComet?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo signature. No ice plume. No radiation trail.\u201d Maris hesitated. \u201cAnd it\u2019s too\u2026 structured.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStructured how?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She expanded the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke leaned forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edges. Planes. Angles that didn\u2019t belong to nature. The thing wasn\u2019t smooth like a rock or fractured like an asteroid. It was jagged, layered\u2014like pieces had been fused together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or dumped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMass?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStill estimating. But\u2026 big.\u201d She swallowed. \u201cVery big.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow big is \u2018very big,\u2019 Lieutenant?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maris met his eyes. \u201cKilometers across, sir. At least twenty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke let out a slow breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A silent, tumbling mass the size of a city block\u2014no, a city\u2014cutting through populated space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny propulsion?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny signal?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNothing intentional. But there\u2019s noise. Background emissions. Chemical traces.\u201d She brought up another display. \u201cOrganic compounds. Industrial byproducts. Heavy metals. Polymers we can\u2019t even identify.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke felt a chill creep up his spine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGarbage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maris nodded once. \u201cThat\u2019s what it looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They intercepted it at the edge of the Carthage Belt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up close, it was worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>Resolute<\/em> drifted alongside the object, dwarfed by its sheer scale. Floodlights washed across a chaotic landscape of fused debris\u2014twisted frameworks, shattered containers, slabs of unknown material welded together by time and pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t a single object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a graveyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho builds something like this?\u201d one of the crew whispered over comms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one builds it,\u201d Rourke said quietly. \u201cThey throw it away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hull cameras zoomed in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke saw fragments of machines\u2014some recognizably mechanical, others disturbingly alien. Cracked surfaces leaked frozen residues. Tangles of filament drifted loose like dead vines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then something moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHold,\u201d Rourke snapped. \u201cZoom sector twelve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The image stabilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A section of the mass shifted\u2014not from rotation, but from within. A ripple passed through a cluster of debris, subtle but unmistakable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maris\u2019s voice was tight. \u201cThat\u2019s not drift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Rourke said. \u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first drone didn\u2019t come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They launched it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standard protocol. Close scan. Material analysis. Risk assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drone disappeared into a fissure\u2014a canyon between towering heaps of refuse. Its feed transmitted for eleven seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then something like a surface\u2014wet, reflective\u2014closing over the lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The signal cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence filled the operations bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSecond drone,\u201d Rourke said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSir\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s an order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second drone lasted longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It mapped interior structures\u2014layers upon layers of compacted waste. Some areas were inert. Others\u2026 weren\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThermal spikes,\u201d Maris reported. \u201cLocalized. Irregular.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLife?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drone rounded a bend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the garbage moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not drifting. Not settling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shifting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As if the entire mass were\u2026 adjusting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The feed filled with motion\u2014surfaces flexing, cavities collapsing and reforming, debris sliding like muscle beneath skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then something struck the drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A flash of impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Static.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke stood alone for a long moment after the feed died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOptions,\u201d he said finally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMinimal,\u201d Maris replied. \u201cWe can\u2019t tow it. We can\u2019t destroy it\u2014not with what we have. And if it keeps its current trajectory\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt hits the colonies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke nodded slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen we change the trajectory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maris blinked. \u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke turned back to the projection. To the impossible mass of discarded remnants from some distant, unknowable civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEverything we\u2019ve got.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They fired first with kinetic strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slugs hammered into the outer layers, blasting away chunks of debris. The mass shuddered\u2014but not like an inert object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It reacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sections contracted. Others expanded. The impacts were\u2026 absorbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSir,\u201d Maris said, voice rising, \u201cit\u2019s redistributing mass. Compensating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKeep firing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Missiles followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explosions blossomed across the surface, tearing open cavities that vented clouds of dust and gas. For a moment, it looked like it might work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the gaps closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not perfectly. Not smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But deliberately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke felt it then\u2014the realization settling in like a weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t just garbage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, sir,\u201d Maris whispered. \u201cIt\u2019s\u2026 something else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collision timer ticked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The colonies had begun evacuation, but it wouldn\u2019t be enough. Not for something this size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke made the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSet reactors to overload.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maris stared at him. \u201cSir, that will\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know what it will do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A cruiser\u2019s core detonation was the only weapon they had left. A controlled starburst. Enough force to shatter a small moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or push something very large\u2026 just enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ll take the shuttle,\u201d Rourke said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s not a suggestion, Lieutenant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her jaw tightened. \u201cWith respect, sir\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s an order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence stretched between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, quietly, she nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>Resolute<\/em> accelerated toward the mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alarms screamed. Systems strained. The reactor climbed toward critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke watched the growing wall of debris fill the forward display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up close, he could see it moving again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not randomly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As if it knew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rourke allowed himself a thin smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah,\u201d he muttered. \u201cI see you too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The timer hit zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White light swallowed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Days later, the reports came in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mass had broken apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not completely.
